SUMMARY
YouthBuild Santa Rosa/Muir Charter School is seeking a part-time teacher to work with program participants in attaining their educational goals. As a John Muir Charter School teacher, you will work with the YouthBuild Santa Rosa program to:
- Provide academic and life-skills training to 20-30 students in partnership with YouthBuild Santa Rosa
- Work with the Education and Construction Managers to coordinate academic classes with vocational training that students receive through the YouthBuild Santa Rosa Program
- Get to know students who are committed to changing their lives through hard work, education and vocational training and community service
John Muir Charter School
John Muir Charter School serves the young men and women in more than 40 YouthBuild, Job Corps, California Conservation Corps, Local Conservation Corps and WIA programs in California. Our students are 16-24 year olds who seek basic academic, vocational and life skills training. Teachers with John Muir Charter School work closely with the staffs of the community agencies the school serves.
YouthBuild Santa Rosa
YouthBuild Santa Rosa, a program of Community Action Partnership of Sonoma County, provides educational and vocational training as well as skill development in leadership, communication, problem-solving and goal-setting to low-income youth in Sonoma County. Program participants are assigned to a team that rotates weekly between vocational training and classroom education.
Students demonstrate through voluntary enrollment in the program and participation in a month-long orientation that they are committed to learning, working as a team and serving their community. This is an exciting opportunity for a teacher to make a difference in the lives of young people and work in a close and committed team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Care about students and their success in learning and accept responsibility for student outcomes
- Assist students at various levels of academic preparation and experience in all subjects
- Work with students to prepare for the California High School Exit Exams (CAHSEE) in English Language Arts and Math
- Incorporate practical learning experiences related to job readiness, construction skills, life skills, leadership and community service
- Coordinate with Muir and YB staff and be a strong team player to ensure comprehensive, integrated services
- Work with students from many cultural, ethnic, linguistic and economic backgrounds and incorporate students' experiences into learning
- Inform Muir staff, YouthBuild staff and other appropriate staff of academic and non-academic issues that affect student progress
- Incorporate college and career planning into regular classroom practice
- Perform administrative duties such as attendance and record-keeping
- Be willing to work flexible schedules to accommodate the varying needs and schedules of enrolled students and our client agencies

Participate in community service projects; attend school activities, workshops and conferences as required
- As requested and trained, participate in data entry and upkeep on student files
- Be willing to participate in mandated partner trainings, such as diversity, job safety etc as requested
Qualifications
- A current California teaching credential of any subject area authorization, C19 letter, or verification of eligibility for a University Internship Credential

Teaching strengths in Mathematics and Science

Tutoring experience highly desirable

Experience with alternative school settings, or previous experience working with low-income, under-educated and underserved youth

Ability to “think outside the box” in order to motivate and support students

Ability to adapt quickly to changes in the daily program activities

Experience in working with youth individually, in small groups and in the classroom to achieve academic objectives and goals

English/Spanish bilingual strongly desired.
Salary: DOE. This is a part-time position (max. 20 hrs. week), Monday through Thursday.
