SUMMARY

John Muir Charter School serves students enrolled in the Venice Community Housing Corporation YouthBuild program. The position is ½ time, and will work exclusively with the pre-YouthBuild/Another Chance program. There is the possibility of increasing to a full time permanent position.

The ½ time teacher will be responsible for assisting students in the Another Chance YouthBuild program to complete their educational training and move into the YouthBuild Program or other secondary education opportunities, and to provide necessary support services to enable participants to be successful as well as develop educational opportunities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties can be assigned.

  • Be able to teach related subjects in a Adult Basic Educational (ABE) setting, High School Diploma, Pre-GED and GED program setting as well.
  • Conduct classes in English/Spanish in which students come from multiplicity of cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and economic backgrounds
  • Participate in staff meetings and committees
  • Perform duties associated with attendance and record-keeping
  • Perform duties associated with instruction, testing, and assessment of students
  • Experience with computer assisted instruction
  • In-depth knowledge of material and instructional methods appropriate for the participating community
  • Perform integrating academic skills and contextual learning into instructional strategies
  • Care about students and their success in learning
  • Be familiar with the school’s curriculum, methods of instruction, and administrative procedures
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in teaching, mentoring, and writing
  • Provide leadership for the school as a whole
  • Accept the philosophy of the Charter School
  • Be willing to work flexible schedules to accommodate the varying needs and schedules of enrolled students and our client agencies
  • Perform student intakes and assessments
  • Maintain student achievement plans and other student file work
  • Accept responsibility for student outcomes

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated knowledge in developing class and individual learning plans for trainees.
  • Working knowledge of principles and techniques of teaching and needs assessment.
  • Dedication to putting in time, energy and effort in developing opportunities for out of work/out of school youth
  • Dedication to the basic philosophy of emphasizing the core curriculum
  • Strong, written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge about, or willingness to become knowledgeable about, the developmental needs of students
  • Sensitivity to the social as well as academic needs of the students
  • Willingness and ability to plan cooperatively with other staff
  • Willingness to continue education through additional courses and training, workshops, seminars and staff development
  • Willingness to be an active participant in staff meetings
  • Commitment to the vision, mission, core values and philosophy of VCHC;


The teacher will manage a classroom of young adult students Monday through Friday each day of the academic year from approximately 2:00-6:30pm. The teacher will assess the particular strengths, challenges, and opportunities of each student using student-assessment methods prescribed by Muir management, as well as methods the teacher may choose to employ. The teacher will work with each student in creating their education goals, objectives and education plans. The teacher will work closely with management and staff of Venice Community Housing Corporation and John Muir Charter School to comply with all applicable federal, state and school education standards.

The teacher will comply with all school policies and procedures of John Muir Charter School and Venice Community Housing Corporation, and will advise Muir managers whenever potential or real conflicts arise between application of Muir policies and procedures and policies and procedures of the client agency.

The teacher will complete all necessary paper work as required by Muir management and administration, as well as any paper work requested by the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools (NCSOS). (The NCSOS approved and oversees the John Muir Charter School and provides Muir with administrative support.)

In support of the client agency, the teacher will occasionally observe and assist students when they are working in the field on various projects that are supervised by client-agency staff. The teacher will integrate the student’s field and classroom experiences in order to increase their value to the student.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or any related field,
  • Currently holds California Teaching Certificates, permits or other documents issued by the Commission on Teaching Credentialing and experience in the teaching field.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

  • Exceptionally strong verbal skills are required, including excellent persuasive ability, the ability to communicate with a diverse group of students and staff, and the ability to make presentations to groups and individuals;
  • Effective written skills required, including the ability to prepare clear and concise training materials and other documentation and reports.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Excellent mathematical skills are required; ability to understand and report
    basic statistics as necessary

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Proficient in the use of a computer, specifically MS Office Suite 2000

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time;
  • May be required to lift up to 30 lbs, such as files, cases of photocopy paper, etc;
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction;
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard;
  • Communication skills using the spoken word;
  • Ability to see within normal parameters;
  • Ability to hear within normal range;
  • Ability to move about.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Indoor, general Social Service office environment;
  • Fast paced, frequent interruptions;
  • Ability to interact well with a diverse client population;
  • Ability to handle difficult client situations;
  • Periodically the Teacher is required to attend meetings in off-site locations;
  • Ability to move about. Able to move quickly to address emergency or potentially dangerous situations.

Compensation
The position pays $22,500 to $30,000 depending on experience. ½ Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits are provided. This is a non-traditional school setting and will include some work hours and work days not found on traditional school calendars.
