Organization
Overview
In 1989, NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson founded St. HOPE Academy
(St. HOPE). What began as a small after-school program has
grown into a national nonprofit community development company
whose mission is to revitalize inner-city communities through
public education, civic leadership, economic development
and the arts. In 2003, St. HOPE launched two major revitalization
projects which combined have initiated an education and
economic resurgence in the underserved, inner-city community
of Oak Park, California. In May 2003, St. HOPE opened the
40 Acres Art and Cultural Center, a mixed-use retail complex
located in the heart of the Oak Park commercial district.
The goal of 40 Acres is to create a destination locale that
would serve as a catalyst for economic and cultural renewal.
Shortly thereafter, St. HOPE opened St. HOPE Public Schools,
a K-12 independent public charter school district comprised
of small schools. The goal of St. HOPE Public Schools is
to provide Oak Park youth with a private school education,
for free. In September 2007, Triumph, a St. HOPE preschool,
will open its doors creating a seamless pre K-12 education
system in Oak Park. For more information on St. HOPE visit
