Speaker: Margaret Fortune
Margaret
Fortune, 36, of Sacramento is the Senior
Advisor to Governor Schwarzenegger, specializing
in education and urban policy. She has more than
a decade of government and non-profit experience.
Fortune has served as an education advisor to
the Governor since 2005 and most recently she
was the Director of Public Affairs. Prior to that,
she was Superintendent of St. HOPE Public Schools,
a Sacramento-based K-12 charter school district
serving 2000 students. There she started Sac High
as a charter school. The school has drawn national
attention and was featured on The Oprah Winfrey
Show. Before joining St. HOPE, Fortune served
as director of Project Pipeline Northern California
Teacher Recruitment Center. Her experience also
includes two years as assistant secretary in the
Office of the Secretary for Education, chair of
the Commission on Teacher Credentialing and service
on the California Children and Families Commission.
Fortune holds a baccalaureate degree in Political
Science from the University of California at Berkeley
where she was the first African American woman
elected student body president. She earned her
Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University’s
Kennedy School of Government.
